Attractions

Creation 2021

“It takes me a day to create the story of one second. It takes ma a year to create the story of a minute. It takes me a whole life to create the story of an hour. It takes me an eternity to create the story of a day. We can do anything except the story of what we are doing.” — Charles Péguy, Clio

Attractions is based on the cinematographic form of the same name. It appeared very early in the history of cinema and consists of a number of very short films.
This form is intended to grab the spectator’s attention by sacrificing the concept of reality, choosing instead to focus on its “capacity of assaulting the spectator with a psychological or sensorial action.”
Developed by the great Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein, the montage of attractions uses the accumulation and the confrontation of a group of images, free of all narration, but encouraging the associations of the spectator’s own psychically-nuanced ideas.
An attraction also defines entertainment activities at fairs and fairgrounds … an ideal metaphor might be the roller coaster.
Attractions eschews a theme or a subject as such, focusing instead on the process, allowing me to revisit the foundations of vocabulary and the idea of fragmentary narration in the purest sense (both literary and cinematographic) and the ongoing friction between reality and fiction.
